Na fase inicial da infância o ser humano depende essencialmente da presença da figura da mãe para sua sobrevivência. Ao chegar na adolescência o indivíduo tende a desenvolver o raciocínio de que não precisa de ninguém, dando provas disso com frases do tipo: A vida é minha e faço dela o que quiser. Pessoas realmente maduras, no entanto, demonstram entendimento mais profundo. Compreendem que vivem num mundo de interdependência, considerando, por exemplo, que o alimento que está em sua mesa pronto para ser ingerido teve a cooperação daquele que plantou, de outro que colheu, de mais um que transportou… Por outro lado, sabe também que não deve supor que alguém ou alguma coisa seja essencial para sua vida, que não pode viver sem isto ou aquilo, sem esta ou aquela pessoa, o que representaria viver num lamentável estado de co-dependência.
Sejamos disciplinados no esforço de vivermos por nossas próprias forças e motivações, sem atribuir a quem quer que seja a responsabilidade de nos fazer feliz, mas jamais nos esqueçamos de que precisamos uns dos outros no longo e complexo processo de realização própria.
